Sparta Falls to Panathinaikos, Maccabi Fights Through

After taking the first leg 3-1 at home Sparta Praha saw their Champions League hopes vanish with a 3-0 loss in Athens.  This is the second year running that Panathinaikos has ended Sparta's run in the home and home.  Goals by Sarriegi and Katsouranis in the 45th and 54th minutes pushed Sparta to the edge of defeat and a late strike by Salpingidis on the 89th minute sealed the deal.  A single goal would have kept the visiting team alive but the home team wouldn't give them the opportunity after surrendering 3 in the first leg.  Panathinaikos advances 4-3 on aggregate and Sparta is left to wonder what could have been for another year. 

There was a great deal of drama in the qualifying round between Maccabi Haifa FC and FK Aktobe as well.  Maccabi gave up three goals in the first 15 minutes and it looked like Aktobe had a clear path through to the playoff round.  But Maccabi battled back with goals from katan and Golsa in the 26th and 34th minutes respectively, and Dvalishvili in the 59th minute, then again in the 62nd minute to give them the lead.  The stunned visiting team had no response and Haifa is through with an astonishing victory. 

In other matches Sporting Clube de Portugal moves through after Peter Wisgerhof scores an own goal during injury time and gives the visiting team the away goal they needed.   FC Salzburg advances with a 2-1 win over Dinamo Zagreb to take the series 3-2 on aggregate.  And Sivasspor take a 3-1 victory agaisnt RSC Anderlecht but cannot overcome the massive lead RSC built up after a 5-0 opening leg victory.  RSC advances 6-3 on aggregate.
